Choose a Sports TV Size by Measuring Your Seat First

Diagonal size is only one measurement. Check eye-to-screen distance, side seats and the readability of match details.

Before choosing a television size, measure from your seated eye position to the screen surface. Also measure the available width and mounting height. The advertised inch measurement is the screen diagonal, not its width or height, so check the model's actual dimensions, including the stand if needed.

How should you use distance guides?

Sony provides resolution-based distance references, including 1.5 times screen height for 4K. It describes the figures as minimum references to adjust for personal preference and the room. The measurement is height, not diagonal. A 70cm-high screen produces a 105cm reference in that calculation, not an instruction to place your sofa there.

Comfort, content and room layout still matter. Do not use panel resolution alone to choose a distance if most programmes arrive from a lower-resolution source.

Test with sports material

Mark a rectangle matching the proposed screen dimensions on the wall and sit in every regularly used seat. When trying a real television, show a wide pitch view, scoreboard and captions. Can you read them without continually leaning forward? Can you follow action across the pitch comfortably? Try a different size if the experience feels awkward.

Include side seats and installation

Check the ends of the sofa, not only the central position. Consider window reflections and screen height relative to your normal posture. Allow space for the stand or soundbar using actual dimensions and installation instructions. A larger size should not force you to obstruct the picture or use an unstable arrangement. Keep the measurements with you when comparing models.
