Hat-Tricks, Braces and Perfect Hat-Tricks

A hat-trick is three goals by one player in a match; the scoring method can add a more specific description.

A hat-trick means three goals by one player in a single match; a brace means two. The basic definition does not require consecutive goals without another scorer intervening, or all three in one half. FIFA's account of Oscar's three-goal final uses the term in this conventional sense.

What makes a hat-trick perfect?

A perfect hat-trick contains a right-footed goal, a left-footed goal and a header. The Premier League's explanation of perfect hat-tricks uses these scoring methods. Perfect does not mean every finish was difficult or the entire performance error-free.

In a hypothetical match, two right-footed goals and a header make a hat-trick but not a perfect one under that definition. A fourth goal takes the player's total beyond three, while a description of the hat-trick completed earlier remains valid in context.

Penalties and shoot-outs are different

A penalty scored during the match counts as a goal for the player. A shoot-out conversion belongs to the separate shoot-out record and does not complete a match hat-trick. Goals across the two legs of a tie likewise cannot be combined into a single-match hat-trick.

Check the official scorer

A deflected effort may be reviewed and credited as an own goal. That can change a player's tally even after an initial celebration. Use the competition's final match report before treating the number as settled.

For analysis, ask how the goals arose: a run behind, a rebound or the finish to a team-mate's delivery. The count records the outcome but cannot by itself describe the assistance or quality of chances the scorer received.
