Corner-Kick Tactics Beyond the First Header

A corner routine starts before delivery and may remain dangerous after the first clearance.

A corner is more than a contest between the tallest players. Starting positions, movement and delivery determine who can reach the ball. FIFA's corner-kick analysis series examines routines targeting the near post, the edge of the area and particular attackers.

Read the setup before the kick

Notice who starts near goal and who approaches from deeper. One player may attack the delivery while a team-mate's movement opens a different route. Taking up space legally is different from holding or pushing an opponent; a planned routine does not make a foul acceptable.

In a hypothetical sequence, one forward runs towards the near post while another drops towards the edge of the box. If defenders follow the first movement, the second player may become available. The starting picture alone does not reveal the intended target. Watch the delivery and the runs together.

What a short corner changes

A nearby pass can create a different crossing angle and draw a defender out of the penalty area. It also gives opponents an opportunity to press the receiver. Judge the space created after the pass rather than treating a short or long corner as automatically superior.

Follow the clearance

  • Who waits outside the area to collect the second ball?
  • Who covers opposing forwards preparing to break?
  • Does the clearance reach safety or an unmarked attacker?

FIFA's analysis of defensive corner strategies shows how marking and covering roles vary. A conceded goal may therefore come from a missed follow-up responsibility, not simply from losing an aerial duel at the first delivery.
