The Football Captain, Armband and Referee Duties

The armband identifies a team role, but does not grant immunity or authority over the referee.

Each team must have a captain on the field wearing an identifying armband under IFAB Law 3. The captain has some responsibility for team behaviour but no special privilege to disregard the rules. This guide concerns the formal role, rather than judging a player's leadership personality.

Appointment and handing over the armband

The team or club determines how its captain is chosen. The Laws do not require the oldest player or leading scorer. When the captain leaves, the team needs another captain on the field. Passing on the armband does not change a tactical position or transfer the coach's substitution decisions.

The captain can represent the team before and during the match, but decisions remain with the officials. Requests must be respectful, and the armband does not remove sanctions for dissent.

The captain-only communication framework

IFAB's captain guidelines describe approaching the referee in key situations and helping prevent team-mates from surrounding the official. They do not prohibit all normal conversation between players and referees.

For 2026/27, check what the competition has adopted. The published text makes the protocol compulsory for competitions starting on or after 1 July 2027. Do not assume universal implementation before that point.

When the goalkeeper is captain

Under the guidelines, an outfield player is nominated to approach instead of the goalkeeper through the prescribed procedure; both should not approach together. This explains why someone without the armband may speak while the goalkeeper remains in position.

Distinguish the armband holder, the authorised communicator in that situation and a team-mate organising play. Those functions can belong to different people without contradiction.
