The Advantage Rule, Why the Referee Lets Play Continue

Advantage preserves a useful opportunity for the non-offending team; it does not erase the offence.

A referee may recognise an offence but allow play to continue when doing so benefits the non-offending team. Under IFAB Law 5, the offence can be penalised if the anticipated benefit does not arise immediately or within a few seconds. This is not an unlimited right to return after a lengthy attack.

Possession is not always an advantage

Imagine a fouled player's pass reaching a team-mate trapped beside the touchline. Keeping the ball does not automatically make continuation better than a free kick. In another hypothetical situation, it may reach a forward facing goal, making an immediate whistle harmful to the attacking side.

IFAB's guidance for officials considers severity, location, the prospect of a promising attack and the match atmosphere. Similar-looking challenges can therefore lead to different decisions when the situation after them differs.

Does the card disappear?

Disciplinary consequences do not necessarily vanish when play continues. Law 12 governs their timing and exceptions for certain tactical offences. A card may follow at the next stoppage, while specific circumstances can change the sanction because the attack continued. The sanction depends on the offence and the applicable exception; continuation alone does not settle it.

Read what followed the signal

Watch the referee's indication, the opportunity reached and the reason for the next stoppage. A genuine opportunity followed by a poor attacking choice is not automatically the same as no advantage arising.

Also distinguish advantage from a delayed whistle for another reason, such as allowing an offside situation to develop. Similar timing does not prove the same rule was applied. An available official explanation is more reliable than inferring intent from silence.
